I worked with David Ledger to explore who we are together and the daily act of performance we call living. We carefully craft the restrained, palatable caricatures of ourselves, knowing that we are acceptable, as long as we are not too powerful. What does this do to us psychologically? The ideas that emerged encompassed laughter as a coping mechanism, hyper-britishness as a social protective mask and the inevitable outpouring of suppressed rage. Graduating from Rambert School in London, Cree began freelancing as a dancer and teacher in the UK, before joining the Johannes Wieland company at the State Theater Kassel in Germany. During her time there she worked with Tom Weinberger, Helder Seabra and Thrbdrgns and after leaving the company continued to work on stage with Marina Mascarell, Johannes Wieland, Elisabeth Schilling and Christopher Roman and on film with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Punchdrunk, Holly Blakey and Carla Massolini. Cree’s own works have been seen at theatres and festivals including Staatstheater Kassel, The Place London, b12 Festival Berlin, Mayfest Bristol, London’s Royal Opera House Linbury Theatre and Sadler's Wells’ Lillian Baylis Studio. As a moderator Cree regularly facilitates talks and events for b12 Festival in Berlin and is a co-curator of their platform ‘deep space’ exploring topics such as artificial vs embodied intelligence, education in the performing arts, personal and career sustainability, and power dynamics in the dance sector. She believes the discussion and interview formats to be critical in connecting us as individuals through our experiences while also challenging the structures of dance and the arts. About the work: Cree’s choreographic/artistic research and work encompasses dance, theatre and satire, questioning the concept of the authentic self, acknowledging the body as a historical resource and a tool for storytelling and human connection. Her practice has a somatic focus aiming to emphasise physical and mental wellbeing in symbiosis. Listening, language and conscious awareness of her own experiences are key to her desire to create safe working spaces in which to exchange. She has an interest in seeing ourselves and understanding our humanness through humour and movement/language specificity.
